1 + 1 exemplary credits are available under the BREEAM Hea08 Security criteria in the BREEAM UK New Construction V7. The newly updated Security section proudly reflects and endorses the methodology that CPTED-UK has been consistently applying in our projects. This alignment is a welcome acknowledgment of our longstanding commitment to embedding robust, evidence-based Crime Prevention through Environmental Design strategies into the built environment.

The BREEAM Hea08 Security credit points out to the NPSA Security Overlay to the RIBA Plan of Work that helps designers and developers embed security by aligning protective security tasks with each stage of the RIBA Plan of Work. It encourages early consideration of security risks and promotes collaboration with qualified security professionals during design development.
By mapping proportionate, risk-based security activities to key project milestones, the overlay ensures that protective measures are integrated seamlessly into the design, rather than added as reactive features later. This approach supports safer, more resilient developments from the outset and contains signposting to other relevant design guidance.
The technical requirements of the BREEAM Hea08 Security place a strong emphasis on the appropriateness of the Suitably Qualified Security Specialists (SQSS) for the project. When appointing the SQSS, consideration should be given to the appropriateness of the individual to carry out the task assigned. The SQSS should be able to demonstrate that they have experience dealing with similar projects with equal security levels and similar risks.
At CPTED-UK, the experience, professional competence, and unwavering integrity of our Suitably Qualified Security Specialists (SQSS) set us apart. These qualities place us at the forefront of the built environment security sector, enabling us to deliver trusted, expert guidance on designing safer, more secure spaces.
- ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
One credit – Security of site and building
- A suitably qualified security specialist (SQSS) must conduct an evidence-based security needs assessment (SNA) during or before Concept Design (RIBA Stage 2). The purpose of the SNA is to identify any security-relevant attributes of the proposed development, site context, and surrounding environment that may influence the security strategy.
- Based on the SNA findings, the SQSS must develop a set of security controls and design recommendations. These must directly address the specific threats and assets identified in the SNA.3
- The agreed security controls and recommendations shall be incorporated into proposals and implemented in the as-built development. Any deviation from those controls and recommendations shall be justified and agreed with the SQSS.
One exemplary credit – Security rating scheme
- A compliant risk-based security rating scheme has been used. The performance against the scheme has been confirmed by independent assessment and verification.
The ‘Security of site and building’ credit must first be achieved for the exemplary credit to be awarded.
