We are privileged to be working alongside Prof. Zoheir Sabeur PhD from the Department of Computing and Informatics at Bournemouth University on an EU project funded by the Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.
The S4AllCities aims to enhance the security of EU citizens in smart urban cities environments using artificial intelligence, detection technologies and cyber-physical security management systems. CPTED-UK have been invited to provide technical advise to the project.
The main objective of a Smart City is to manage its functions more efficiently by reducing costs, process optimization and ensuring more agile and effective security for citizens. Application of Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles to Smart Cities allows for resourcefulness, multifunctionality and cost-efficiency. Technology is an ally for sustainability, well-being, and resilience to natural and manmade hazards.
The state of art security systems will be tested during the validation pilots in 3 European cities- Trikala, Bilbao and Pilsen. Each pilot looks at a specific set of urban environment features that constitute soft targets.
The Trikala pilot in Greece focuses on the protection of crowded places and smart city transport infrastructure, public buildings, and the central park. The park in Trikala is recognised for its Christmas Festival activities. The city has recently introduced autonomous bus transport infrastructure.
Protection of crowds during mass gatherings for festivities in the city centre and metro station will be piloted in Bilbao, Spain. The pilot scenario will be based on the anomaly and illicit behaviour detection in high-risk areas.
The Pilsen pilot scenario in Czech Republic focuses on a crisis situation during a mass gathering of people in a single space. It will look at evacuation of 15 000 people from a football stadium and its surroundings in the event of a terrorist attack, or a leak of a toxic ammonia gas from the neighbouring Pilsner Urquell brewery.
S4AllCities project aims to make cities’ infrastructures, services, ICT systems and Internet of Things more resilient while promoting intelligence and information sharing amongst security stakeholders. This work will play a role in promoting good safety and security practices in European cities.
